Tell us a little bit about yourself:
My name is Tiffany Walensky and I have been a photographer in the Tampa area since 2008. I have experience in all areas of photography, but currently I specialize in maternity and newborns, which is where my passion is. I have a home studio, where I live in Wesley Chapel with my husband Mark and our daughters Brooke and Bailey. When not working, I enjoy reading, travelling (especially to the Smoky Mountains!) and spending time with my family. As a family we enjoy swimming, walking our dogs, and visiting theme parks and aquariums. I love animals, and we have several pets including two dogs, hamsters, and a tank full of fish. I’ve always been an artist, mostly digital, and before photography I studied website design.
How did you get started in photography?
Photography has always been an interest to me, but it didn’t grow into a business until after I started my family. I left my job in Human resources to stay home after I gave birth to our first daughter, and photography filled my time as a hobby and a way to capture our growing family. I quickly began receiving photography requests from friends and family and my business officially began in 2008. After photographing families for a couple years, I decided to narrow down to maternity and newborn so I could concentrate on making my specialties more unique and creative.
What do you shoot?
I started out shooting all areas of photography, including families, high school seniors, maternity, newborn, and even a wedding! After a couple of years I decided to focus on maternity and newborns, with occasional baby’s first year sessions as well.
Who or what inspires you?
I am inspired by everything! There are several photographers who inspire me, but I try to take inspiration more from my surroundings. I strive to be unique and create my own ideas based on my own style and my client’s personalities. I am inspired by COLOR. A beautiful sunset full of rich rainbow colors can leaving me staring in breathless wonder. I love the colors found in nature, bright blue skies, vibrant green trees, golden sunlight. I am inspired by LIGHT. Light is the most important aspect of photography. Without good light, you have nothing. Whether it is sunlight, or studio lighting, I strive to use lighting in a way that is creative in providing stunning images.
What kind of camera bag do you carry and what’s in it?
I use a Canon brand backpack to carry all my gear. I have tried the cute stylish purse camera bags, but found a rugged backpack to be more my style. I have two Canon Mark III camera’s, I always carry a backup just in case. The lenses in my bag depend on the situation, but usually for outdoor sessions I carry a 70-200mm f/2.8 Canon lens, which is my favorite outdoor lens, and a 35mm f/1.4 for wider shots. I also have a 135mm and a 15mm fisheye that I use occasionally. Indoors, I mostly only use my 35mm.
What are some of your favorite photography products?
I love my Canon Speedlite flash. While some photographers are ‘anti-flash’, I love knowing that I can always bring in supplemental light when needed.
Three random things about yourself:
I have lived in the same state (Florida) my entire life – as have both my parents
I love karaoke
I’ve never gotten a tattoo, but I had my eyebrow pierced in high school
Best piece of advice you’ve received?
The only photographer you should compare yourself to is the one you used to be!
Any advice you’d like to share?
Learn the business! Too many photographers only learn the camera aspect and do not succeed. Taking pictures is a very small part of running a successful photography business. Learn how to price yourself properly based on your business costs – do not compete on price.
Mac or PC? Photoshop or Lightroom?
I use a Dell PC, and Adobe Creative Cloud including Lightroom and Photoshop. I use Lightroom for culling, organizing, and batch global adjustments, and Photoshop for fine detail editing.
