Tell us a little bit about yourself:
I’m a native east coaster – based in Northern NJ – Where I live with my 2 little girls, my muses – my silly pups and an extremely patience husband who puts up with all our mayhem :). In all my 12 years in business This year has been the most transformative for me. I’ve been spending time to focus on creating work that is not just authentic and real life, but also creative and unique… I come from a place of fine art photography – and want to start to look at images not just as moments – but artful ones, ones that someone might not initially expect to want – but can not stop looking at once in front of them. I’ve been steadily be working on my 365, creating a new workshop for photographers, enjoying life- looking forward to spending time with my girls creating art and playing fetch with my pup whenever I can!
How did you get started in photography?
I sometimes feel as though I’m part of a dying breed – I started my photography journey while in college, before digital photography… learning how to develop my own film and print in a darkroom. I spent many hours in the quiet of both a black and white and/or color print lab. Creating art. I interned for 2 amazing fashion photographers, Norman Jean Roy and David LaChapelle – seeking out and landing the internships even though I did not go to a prominent, fancy art school After school I worked for a photographer in NYC as his studio manager and 2nd wedding photographer. Within 9mns of working for him I realized that I could and SHOULD be doing this for myself. I spent the next 8 years building and growing my wedding business in NYC. During that time I met my husband and had my 1st daughter… Having her changed me and my business goals – leading me into family photography – and eventually landing me where I am today, a documentary photography and film maker. I find it SO important to remember life’s moments – as they are fleeting…
What genre do you shoot?
Fine art inspired documentary family photography and videos. I shoot life as it is – but with the intent to not just document what I see but create art while I’m doing it.
Who or what inspires you?
Relationships – and the bonds that hold us together… I am fascinated by sibling relationships – being an only child, watching my own girls together and documenting their ever growing and changing relationship is truly amazing. Also the bonds of friendship – young and old… I hold my friends close to me – like family – and their children and my children… they too are a large part of my photographic journey, how they play into the lives of my children.
Humor – I think it is so important to document the humorous aspects of life, parenthood, childhood, and so much more! Kids are hilarious – from their tantrums, to their expressions, to the joys! I love capturing that as well!
In regards to photographic inspiration – I’ve always loved Francesca Woodman – her beautiful, eerie, self portraits always resonate with me – and as a photography student really pushed me to work with myself as my subject- something I still try and do within my own personal 365 – to include myself at least every other week…
for a more modern photographic inspiration – I think it changes as I evolve. I recently stumbled upon Ana M Rosenberg – her bw’s are incredible and her depth with them are amazing to me… whereas Melissa Walkup’s color editing is omg amazing!
I think we are always evolving and changing as we go.
What kind of camera bag do you carry and what’s in it?
I have 2! My professional bag and my personal one!
For my client sessions I have a house of flynn backpack – it is packed with both my canon 5d mark4 and a 24-70 lens. as well as my new love – FujiFilm X-T2 with a 18-55 or 23mm on it.
For my personal – day to day work I use an ONA bag (kinda obsessed with it!) and it has only one camera – my FujiFilm X-T2.
I am now shooting MOST of my client work with the X-T2 – the size and weight are just perfect for me.
What are some of your favorite photography products?
I LOVE me some lensbabies – they allow me to just have fun but create something different – i use the edge 50 and sweet 35.
I also am really enjoying Ana M Rosenberg’s presets for my post work – mostly for BW processing.
Besides that I’m a purist and like to just capture the moment.
Three random things about yourself:
I can touch my tongue to my nose! My girls think it is pretty cool!
I lived in Hong Kong when I was younger
I have grand plans to travel the world and take a “Gap year” in a few years.
Best piece of advice you’ve received?
no one else can do it for you, or as good as you can, or want it as badly as you do… so do it for yourself and make your dreams a reality.
Any advice you’d like to share?
I always teach my girls to be proud, gracious, kind, and strong – I think the same holds true for personal success and happiness.
