Lisa Rappa Photography

Areas Served:
Atlanta, GA and surrounding areas (and happy to travel)

Tell us a little bit about yourself:
I’m an annoyingly proud mom of a 3 and 4 year old and a self taught portrait photographer that specializes in working with babies and children. So basically, I can often be found, sneezing with exaggeration, dancing in circles, and making a total fool of myself 😉

How did you get started in photography?:
I always was the “picture taker” growing up, but didn’t take it seriously until I had my two babies, got a DSLR as a very special birthday gift in 2010, and during my time as a stay at home mom became a little obsessed with capturing my two as best as I could. I quickly decided that my babies needed a break from being the focus of my camera at all times and took the plunge to pursue my dream job. I have always loved working with kids and used to teach, so focusing my new passion of photography towards children was a given for me.

What do you shoot?:
My heart is with the little ones, so the majority of my work is with newborns and toddlers, but I also do a lot of family sessions and work with kids of all ages. I love the variety that my job allows me…never a dull moment!

Who or what inspires you?:
My kids, without question. Whenever I feel burned out, I turn my camera back on them and they remind me what I love so much about my life and photography…the real moments and their joy.

What kind of camera bag do you carry and what’s in it?:
Tamarac adventure backpack and most often my 5d Mark II, Canon 35 mm 1.4, 70-200 2.8, and 580 exII, along with other random things like memory cards, candy, etc. I also have a 50 1.4 and 85 1.2, but haven’t been using those as much these days. They are always good to have though for when I want to mix things up!

What are some of your favorite photography products?:
I have been fortunate to get to work with some talented prop vendors such as Little Boo Creations, Hippity Hoot Notions, Bella Blooms Boutique, and 4th Generation Designs and am so thankful for all of them! My clients love having cute headbands, tutus and crocheted items to choose from at their sessions and they have supplied me with so many adorable items. I also recommend the Daisy Grip for those times you just can’t get a child to look at the camera on your own and don’t have someone to assist you. And my collapsible reflector is pretty much with me at ALL times.

Three random things about yourself:
I am much more productive when I feel busy or overwhelmed.
If there is cheese dip in front of me, I will eat it…all of it.
My celebrity crush is Ryan Gosling (think he reads IB&C?)

Best piece of advice you’ve received?:
Not exactly advice I received in words, but I think the best EXAMPLE I’ve seen in the business is my friend Meg Davidson of Meg Davidson Photography. From the beginning of my career and w/not even knowing me all that well, she was an open book to me whenever I had questions and is always a very giving person in both her personal life and business. I am often reminded by her example to be supportive of others in the business and that we can all help each other out while also defining who we are as individual photographers too. Luckily, in our local community here in Georgia we have a great group of friendly, supportive photographers and I love that!

Any advice you’d like to share?:
Don’t compare yourself to what others are doing or underestimate your value as a photographer, but focus on your own growth and believe in yourself…if you do, others will too! Cliche’ I know, but true.

Mac or PC? Photoshop or Lightroom?:
Mac and Photoshop
