Tell us a little bit about yourself:
Hi! My name is Kristina McCaleb. I live in Dallas, Texas. I am married to a firefighter, which keeps scheduling interesting. We have two children, Jack and Sophie. I currently specialize in newborn and children’s photography. When I am not working we like to go camping around Texas. We also have a goal of seeing all 50 states before the kids turn 18. We have a lot to go! I also love a good road trip and stopping at some quirky places along the way.
How did you get started in photography?
I got started a long time ago. When I was in high school I wanted to try photography for yearbook but didn’t take the required photography class. So when I went off to college the very first class I signed up for was a beginner photography class. I can still remember that Tuesday/Thursday class and the lab in the basement of the building! It is where I fell in love with making pictures.
What do you shoot?
I shoot a little bit of everything (with the exception of weddings). I currently specialize in newborns and children. I love, love, love working with newborns. As my kids grow up though and have stopped letting me shoot them, I have found a love for documentary photography. There is a great group of women in my area who are learning the art of documentary photography! And I love following what they do!
Who or what inspires you?
So much inspires me! I have always loved quotes, scripture, and special meanings of words. I love putting those words to images. I love capturing the emotions that happen everyday. Those emotions give way to the best expressions. My children have very animated expressions so getting to keep their childhood on our walls is very important to me.
What kind of camera bag do you carry and what’s in it?
I have a backpack and a JoTotes. I use my backpack for sessions and my JoTotes for everyday life! I currently use the 5dmiii, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4, and 200mm 1.4. I am anxiously waiting on my 35mm to arrive. I have a few other specialty lenses in my stash but they haven’t been out much lately.
What are some of your favorite photography products?
I love educational products! I have so many photography books that I am reading! I also have a huge stash of creativeLive videos that need to be watched over and over again!
Three random things about yourself:
1. I love eating ice cream with a fork.
2. I can quote the movie The Princess Bride almost word for word.
3. My anniversary is on Valentine’s Day but it wasn’t planned that way.
Best piece of advice you’ve received?
“You are Enough”. I am almost positive it was Sue Bryce who said it in a talk but this has stuck with me. I am good enough now.
Any advice you’d like to share?
My best piece of advice is to take your time with what you love! Even if you have to make money with it, don’t rush it. There is so much to learn and you will grow so much better if you don’t try to do everything at once. There is a lot to know about photography. And no great photographer learned it all quickly.
Mac or PC? Photoshop or Lightroom?
Mac. PS and LR.
