Tell us a little bit about yourself:
Hi! I’m Courtney. Wife to my sexy super nerd, Michael. Mama to five adorable migraine makers. A drilling engineer. And a photographer.
How did you get started in photography?
In 2003 I found a community college that offered classes and developed in the darkroom. It was everything I hoped it would be and more. And I never stopped shooting after that.
What do you shoot?
I am a multi-genre shooter. I shoot macro, nature, lifestyle, environmental, and wildlife. I must admit, having a range of children I find some stages less cooperative than others and that leads me to my “take it as it is” style. I don’t beg or bribe anymore.
Who or what inspires you?
My inspiration comes from all around. My family, friends, nature, and beauty. Colors. Shapes. Feelings. I don’t look to a source or fellow photographer to lead me to it, but rather I enjoy the energy and creativity that comes from my peers and pushes me to get out there and make something of myself and my photography.
What kind of camera bag do you carry and what’s in it?
Uhhhh. So. I have a little bit of what we might call a camera bag “collection”. I don’t have shoes. I don’t have purses. But I seem to collect camera bags. But my everyday camera + diaper bag is a Kelly Moore Esther. I usually bring along my camera +35mm if I am just out and about. Since I have so many children I really don’t get out that often anymore. My camera bag is pretty much my TV stand where I keep my camera and my 105mm 2.8 macro lens and my 35mm 1.4 for easy access.
What are some of your favorite photography products?
I love my lens pen and rocket air. I wish I could say I am really really careful, but, things are usually chaos around here so things happen. By things I mean dirt. I still haven’t had time to clean off my macro lens so every single photo I hit a quick “q” and use the spot tool.
Three random things about yourself:
I have an insane amount of energy.
I was born in Holland and can eat a shameful amount of salted black licorice in one sitting.
I collect office supplies.
Best piece of advice you’ve received?
“If you want to be happy be.” Ok. So maybe Tolstoy didn’t exactly “give” me that advice, but it’s the truth. Happiness isn’t found, it’s made.
Any advice you’d like to share?
Don’t get so involved you get lost in the process. Stay true to yourself and remember the real people that matter.
Mac or PC? Photoshop or Lightroom?
I’m a Mac. And I’m actually a new LR user. I still use PS on occasion, but before I was an ACR user.
Where else can we find you on the web?
I try and make the rounds in a lot of different arenas. But I’m teaching a new workshop at In Beauty & Chaos this fall so you will definitely find me there!
