The Capital Region of New York

Tell us a little bit about yourself:
Hi! I’m a wife, mother and photographer in the Capital Region of upstate New York. Now that my 6-year-old son is in kindergarten I am relaunching my documentary/lifestyle wedding and portrait photography business. Before I became a mom, I was a photojournalist for Sun-Times Media in the Chicago area for six years and a wedding photographer for several Chicago studios for ten years. After my family, photography is my number one passion and I’m always studying different types of photography as well as practicing my craft.

How did you get started in photography?
My grandfather was a photographer in Soulac-sur-Mer, France when my mom was a little girl. My Mom followed in his artistic footsteps and worked as an artist and designer in Chicago and while I was growing up, she was always taking photos. Since I was 13 I knew I wanted to be a photographer. In my late 20s, I answered a strong calling to pursue photography as a profession.

What genre do you shoot?
My passion in images is authenticity. I was trained as a photojournalist in the University of Montana photojournalism program and worked in newspapers for six years. Now, I bring my passion for authenticity to family portraiture and wedding photography. I strive to make honest images filled with love and connection.

Who or what inspires you?
I’m inspired by people and love. People are immensely varied and so are their expressions of love. Finding authenticity in human variety and love is a joy. Great light is nice too, but not essential in my opinion 🙂 Also, we lived in Oregon for five years where there are so many different landscapes; photographing nature’s beauty is infinitely inspiring.

What kind of camera bag do you carry and what’s in it?
I have two Lowepro camera bags that I’ve had for a long time and they have never failed me. I also like my Think Tank belt and rolling case. I have Nikon 35mm digital and film bodies with Nikon prime and zoom lenses and Nikon speedlights. I keep basic supplies in my bags should the need arise for a bride, a portrait subject or for myself: scissors, snacks, tape, lint roller, money, pens, and paper. I also, have a fortune cookie quote in my bag, “If you must, you can,” to help me move past my fears.

What are some of your favorite photography products?
I’ve been using White House Custom Color for print products. The prints are beautiful and the customer service is very consistent and professional. I did several test prints with different labs, including non-professional consumer labs, to see if the professional price is worth it, and White House Custom Color’s prints were the best. For albums I’m going to offer Asuka Book’s Fine Art Layflat book to my clients. The design is timeless and artful.

Three random things about yourself:
I worked as a white water raft guide on the Rio Grande in Texas and the Arkansas River in Colorado; I’ve lived in nine different states; and I love to garden.

Best piece of advice you’ve received?
When I’ve doubted myself as a photographer (which is everyday at least once a day, lol) I always remember that my high school photography teacher believed in me. Thanks, Mr. Knippenberg! That has been invaluable and gave me the courage to believe in myself. Second best piece of advice that I have read over and over again in my photography studies is to trust your instincts and vision. I take this to mean that the more your images come from a quiet and honest place, the better they will be. Don’t try to make images like the photographers you love, make the images YOU want to make. Putting this idea into action for me is tougher than it sounds, but worth striving for every day.

Any advice you’d like to share?
Believe in yourself, trust your vision and work hard! Take photos as much as you can. But, don’t be afraid to step back if you need to. Push yourself to your limit photographically but be sure to rest too! Simple advice but I believe it can take you far. Work hard to develop your skills and vision – a lifelong process that is totally worth it when you start to see the images that you want to create come to fruition.

Mac or PC? Photoshop or Lightroom?
Whatever is available. I’m not picky! I currently use a PC and Lightroom but I have used a Mac and Photoshop too and they each work great!

Tell us a little bit about your session!
Mother’s Day is coming around the corner and I was thinking to do something to celebrate the love of mums, so it was just the right time when I was booked for this family session! We teamed up with local florist Flos on the Folk and Dutch designer Angelle Chang for this stylized family session. I’m like living in the dream to see all the images from my mind going live now! It’s sooo lovely when I saw the boy Branydon gives the flower to his mum, “this is a gift for you!” that I captured it immediately! It’s so touching for me to witness the interaction of kids and mum and dad! I just love seeing and capturing the unobtrusive in-between moments for beautiful families!

Areas of the world you Serve:
Texas + Oregon

Tell us a little bit about yourself:
I am a Filipino/Dutch, South Texas native, who frequently visits Oregon for adventure and family. I am married to my high school sweetheart and am a proud momma to one very adventure seeking boy! My son has autism and it has been a journey for us trying to navigate the world through his eyes. We love to travel and have made it a goal to visit one new location every year, I have recently gotten into gardening, and we love watching Moana so my son can voice himself along with the songs!

Kerlyn Van Gelder Photography - Featured Photographer #inbeautyandchaos #texas #oregon #photographer #weddings #family #motherhood

How did you get started in photography?
Well like many I’m sure, I’ve always been interested in photography from a young age. I loved looking through our family albums and my parents would buy me disposable cameras to take pictures with. When I started college I wanted to be a National Geographic photographer and my parents bought me my first DLSR. Photography classes weren’t quite what I was hoping they’d be and switched my major over to Art History, which I completely fell in love with. It wasn’t until my son was born, 2.5 years ago, that I picked up my camera and started feeling passionate about photography again. I am self taught and after a year of learning manual upgraded to full frame, opened my business, and am in love with the intimate connections I capture!

What genre do you shoot?
I shoot motherhood, families, and couples/weddings!

Kerlyn Van Gelder Photography - Featured Photographer #inbeautyandchaos #texas #oregon #photographer #weddings #family #motherhood

Who or what inspires you?
When I first started shooting, my son inspired me. I wanted to capture his growth and changes, as well as his everyday life in childhood. Around 15 months we started to see some major delays with him and photographing him became more difficult as my focus turned to therapy and clients only. During that time, we felt he might be displaying some common traits of ASD and about a year later he was officially diagnosed with autism. What I felt should’ve have been me capturing sweet and fun moments, weren’t a part of our daily life. We had struggles as we desperately tried to communicate, but I started to really view the world through my son’s eyes. Capturing his adventurous spirit as he ran away from me was our family album normal. He helped mold me into a more understanding person and made me approach my art so differently than when I first started my business. I look at things so much differently now and want to convey the feelings we have into photographs.

I am so inspired by the way we FEEL towards our lovers and babes, and not the way our everyday life looks like. Time is fleeting and so much gets lost in the shuffle of responsibilities and I strive to slow down a bit of time with my mothers and brides. I am inspired by the way a mother runs after her babes on the sandy dunes of the coast and then pulls them in so closely so she can breathe in the scent of their delicate hair. I am inspired by the way my bride wraps up tightly in the arms of her husband to escape the cold drops of mist from a waterfall. I am inspired by the way my son explores the forests of Oregon, his adventurous heart seeking out every bit of curiosity in this very big world. I think human emotion drives us and when we look at photos we first remember the way we felt in that moment. That is what I want people to feel when they see their photos from me.

What kind of camera bag do you carry and what’s in it?
I have a Portage backpack, 2 – Nikon D750s, Sigma Art 35mm, Nikon 50mm, Sigma Art 24mm, Yongnuo Speedlite

Kerlyn Van Gelder Photography - Featured Photographer #inbeautyandchaos #texas #oregon #photographer #weddings #family #motherhood

What are some of your favorite photography products?
Wow, well I think my favorite has to be camera/lens combo. Nikon and Sigma were my go to and my 24mm is great for landscapes! I only edit in Lightroom and love it. I print through Millers and they always turn out so beautiful, their albums are my favorite. AlbumStomp/BlogStomp are must haves for my website and tangible gifts. I have been looking at a Lensbaby and hoping to get one this year, as well as a new flashlite!

Kerlyn Van Gelder Photography - Featured Photographer #inbeautyandchaos #texas #oregon #photographer #weddings #family #motherhood

Three random things about yourself:
I watch The Office while I edit and I’ve seen it over 30 times.
I like stale movie theater popcorn.
I am desperately trying to create a lush garden in our backyard of coastal sand and fire ants!

Kerlyn Van Gelder Photography - Featured Photographer #inbeautyandchaos #texas #oregon #photographer #weddings #family #motherhood

Best piece of advice you’ve received?
“You are in charge of everything in the frame.”

Any advice you’d like to share?
Invest in your education! Purchase breakouts, go to a workshop once a year, invest in business courses, find your people and connect with them, visit them, talk with them, shoot with them!

Tell us a little bit about yourself:
I am a natural light, on-location photographer specializing in children and families serving the northern Virginia, Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, and central Maryland area. Not only am I a photographer, but I also have a Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy. When I’m not behind the camera, I enjoy spending time with my husband, two children, and two miniature dachshunds.

Danelle Sergent Photography - Featured Photographer #inbeautyandchaos #featuredphotographer #naturallight #onlocation #virginiaphotographer #marylandphotographer #familyphotographer #childphotographer

How did you get started in photography?
I remember getting my first camera when I was about 12 years old. My dad made it a special event- we went to the camera store and out to eat at my favorite restaurant afterwards. It was just a simple film camera, but I’ll never forget the excitement of capturing those childhood memories in a picture. The birth of my two children took that childhood wonderment and ignited a new passion for photography within me. I view photography as a way of documenting life and preserving memories that can be treasured for years and generations to come. Being able to creatively capture life in a picture is a joy, and those small moments of time that express love and beauty in an image will now never fade from our memory.

What kind of camera bag do you carry and what’s in it?
I carry an Evermore bag by House of Flynn. In it I have two Canon 6D camera bodies and the following lenses: 24-70 2.8L, 135 1.2L, Sigma 35 1.2, and 70-300 1.2-5.6. You’ll also find a photovison target, a container of glitter, smarties (for bribing toddlers during sessions), camera batteries, a lenspen, and multiple camera cards.

Danelle Sergent Photography - Featured Photographer #inbeautyandchaos #featuredphotographer #naturallight #onlocation #virginiaphotographer #marylandphotographer #familyphotographer #childphotographer

What are some of your favorite photography products?
I love my lenspen! I use it to clean all my lenses before each session, and it’s great for quick touchups too. I’m also in love with my House of Flynn camera bag. It’s the only bag I have found that can carry all my gear, but still is very durable, and quite stylish!

Tell us a little bit about your session!
This was a little impromptu session of my daughter after nursing her to sleep on a recent afternoon. I happened to have some fresh-cut roses on my kitchen table that I really wanted to photograph. The bedroom always has some lovely natural light shining through the doors, so I figured why not? Moving the flowers around and on her body in different ways, I just played around and ended up loving the results. Thank goodness she’s a heavy sleeper! I know that I will cherish these photos of her for years to come.

I love when I leave a session and can’t wait to upload and view every. single. image. THIS was that session. For me, it’s all about connection, and that was all I felt during this mommy & me session. I absolutely adored photographing Fiabella and her mama while they laughed and sang songs together. Fia was diagnosed with Isodicentric Chromosome 15 when she was just six months old and is autistic. Fiabella is the most beautiful little girl and her mother epitomizes strength and love. This was definitely one of my favourite sessions.

I have a soft spot for photographing first-time parents. Everyone knows that the first weeks of parenthood are exhausting, and quite simply, overwhelming. However, there is no denying that we are dealing with big love–the biggest love we can experience. I want to capture the wonder that comes from this love. I can see it in the eyes of first-time parents as they hold their little ones, almost a childlike wonder. I also love to capture the connection between new parents. It sounds corny, but I often ask them to look into each other’s eyes and congratulate each another on their incredible accomplishment.

Tell us a little bit about your session!
I have wanted to photograph a dancer for quite some time. I had a vision and the perfect location, I just had to wait to find the dancer and the time. I found my dancers through my daughter’s dance studio who were interested in doing the session with me, then we just had to coordinate a day that worked for all of us. After months of cancellations due to schedules and weather, we were finally able to make December 1st work for all of us. We thought it might snow, but I knew I could work that into my vision, but when we got to our location the weather was amazing, and it was even quite warm. The girls did amazing at the whole session, and we had so much fun. This was my first time photographing dancers, but it felt so good to be creative and to finally get my vision onto photographs. It has fueled my creativity within my photography and given me a new spark. I would love to do more sessions like this when I get the chance.
