Tell us a little bit about your session!
This is the millionth time I’ve worked with this gorgeous soul! I have been there throughout the entire pregnancy and birth of their first child, and thrilled I would be there for their second child! The military-gods knew what they were doing when they stationed us together again! We both lived in Okinawa Japan and PCS’d within a month of each other to Tucson Arizona! This lady here rocked the beach and East China Sea back in 2015 and clearly showed Mtn. Lemmon and the Tucson Valley what was up this year in 2017! The beauty and grace this woman has amazes me each time I have her in front of my lens. If I could be her personal paparazzi 24/7 I would!

Tell us a little bit about your session!
As a lifestyle photographer, I am always searching for the beauty in every day moments and ultimately attempting to capture the FEELING of those moments. This newborn session was a perfect blend of those two creative needs. Not only was I able to capture timeless images of this sweet little guy and his incredible-to-work-with family, looking at these images I can absolutely feel the overwhelming joy, love, and chaos that naturally come with welcoming a new baby into the family.

Areas of the world you Serve:
Upstate South Carolina

Tell us a little bit about yourself:
I was born into a family of storytellers in the Ozarks, where heritage, myths, and folklore were passed down like family heirlooms. Because of this, I developed a love of documenting and words and visual stories and collected them like the rocks I stuffed in my pockets. I found that visual storytelling had a profound way of connecting people and I have become driven (and somewhat obsessive) with creating art that elicits an emotional response. I now live in beautiful Upstate South Carolina on the side of a gentle mountain with my husband, three big, goofy dogs, and one fat cat.

How did you get started in photography?
My PaPa has been a huge influence in my life and he was our unofficial family historian, documenting countless memories and moments in our family. He always had a camera with him and I grew up watching him document the things that were important to him and I think his love of storytelling was then passed on to my mother and then to me. My parents encouraged my artistic pursuits and bought countless rolls of Kodak film for my point and shoot camera over the years. As I got older, it frustrated me that I couldn’t bring the images in my head to life the way I wanted and I realized that to do that, I would need to learn how to shoot manually. So, while out for a run with a dear friend of mine, she suggested a photography course that was being offered on the local technical college and I enrolled. I’ll never forget the moment it “clicked” for me – my class was outside shooting and my photography teacher was showing us how to change our ISO and that was the moment I started to comprehend the power of manual photography. I’ve been obsessive about shooting and documenting and learning ever since.

What genre do you shoot?
I am a natural light photographer and I shoot primarily Senior sessions, portraits, and family sessions.

Who or what inspires you?
My husband and family, the work of author Mary Oliver, Nature, my friend Christina of Shaw Photography Co. (she is a keeper!), an incredible network of women, and my students.

What kind of camera bag do you carry and what’s in it?
I carry the Filson’s Photographer’s Backpack. My husband got it for me for our anniversary several years ago and it is perfect for me because most of my shoots are off the beaten path and I need something that I can carry through wilderness areas that feels secure and keeps my gear safe. It also allows me to stash snacks, water, sunscreen, and other essentials. I carry two Sony camera bodies (my a99, which I adore and my very first DSLR, a Sony a300), and my 3 favorite lenses – Sony 50mm Prime (which stays on my camera the majority of the time), Sony 85mm, and Sony 18-70mm.

Ashley Hallmark Photography - Featured Photographer #inbeautyandchaos #storyteller #familysession #seniorsession #dailylife

What are some of your favorite photography products?
I am a pretty low-key and minimalistic photographer, so I pretty much just love the basics – my Sony a99, my Sony lenses, and some creative tools. I love using a prism I ordered off Amazon and I also carry around a brass nut I dug out of our garage to create flare/ring of fire in some of my shots. I don’t know if this really counts as a “product,” but I love the website, keh.com, because I can find gently used gear in excellent condition at a fraction of the cost of new equipment. I bought my Sony 50mm Prime during their online Black Friday sale and saved a lot of money.

Three random things about yourself:
I am a high school teacher by day and love working with teenagers (although I tease them and routinely tell them that they are making me rethink my life choices); my days with them are never dull. The songs of whippoorwills are one of my favorite sounds on the planet and make me nostalgic for home, and I aspire to be a beekeeper one day.

Best piece of advice you’ve received?
The desires of your heart are there for a reason, so honor them. And I live by Brene Brown’s, “Connection is why we are here.” It’s all about that.

Ashley Hallmark Photography - Featured Photographer #inbeautyandchaos #storyteller #familysession #seniorsession #dailylife

Any advice you’d like to share?
Take on a project that scares you/pushes your boundaries (I did a 365 project last year and grew so much from it), take time to talk to your clients at the beginning of a session to give them time to acclimate and get comfortable before getting out your camera, keep learning and educating yourself, be gentle with yourself and the creative process, be kind, be supportive of and generous with other artists, find your kindred spirits, and don’t let photography become the one facet of your life..enrich it with other activities. Go outside – at least once a day. Put the camera down sometimes and be fully present and make sure to read as much Mary Oliver as possible. And trust your intuition.

Ashley Hallmark Photography - Featured Photographer #inbeautyandchaos #storyteller #familysession #seniorsession #dailylife

Mac or PC? Photoshop or Lightroom?
PC just because it’s what I currently have and I use LR more than PS since switching to RAW. I don’t do a lot of post-processing and it’s one of the things I really pride myself on…I want my photographs to be very true to the moment. Plus, I just don’t like to sit and edit for long amounts of time.

Love the raw natural moments in your photos, I too prefer to only use Lightroom in post processing. ReplyCancel

Tell us a little bit about your session!
During the winter months when the weather is so very gloomy, I take the opportunity to work on still life photography. This past winter was looooong and rainy. After many sessions of still life work, I found myself working on food. After reading a blog post about these Nordicware cookie presses, I knew I had to give them a try. I loved the wooden handles and the dark gray rough finish. They were the perfect photography subject, and the resulting cookies weren’t bad either! I set everything up on a table next to a window with northern exposure. I then was able to shoot from different directions, working around different sides of the table.

Tell us a little bit about yourself:
I’m a native east coaster – based in Northern NJ – Where I live with my 2 little girls, my muses – my silly pups and an extremely patience husband who puts up with all our mayhem :). In all my 12 years in business This year has been the most transformative for me. I’ve been spending time to focus on creating work that is not just authentic and real life, but also creative and unique… I come from a place of fine art photography – and want to start to look at images not just as moments – but artful ones, ones that someone might not initially expect to want – but can not stop looking at once in front of them. I’ve been steadily be working on my 365, creating a new workshop for photographers, enjoying life- looking forward to spending time with my girls creating art and playing fetch with my pup whenever I can!

How did you get started in photography?
I sometimes feel as though I’m part of a dying breed – I started my photography journey while in college, before digital photography… learning how to develop my own film and print in a darkroom. I spent many hours in the quiet of both a black and white and/or color print lab. Creating art. I interned for 2 amazing fashion photographers, Norman Jean Roy and David LaChapelle – seeking out and landing the internships even though I did not go to a prominent, fancy art school After school I worked for a photographer in NYC as his studio manager and 2nd wedding photographer. Within 9mns of working for him I realized that I could and SHOULD be doing this for myself. I spent the next 8 years building and growing my wedding business in NYC. During that time I met my husband and had my 1st daughter… Having her changed me and my business goals – leading me into family photography – and eventually landing me where I am today, a documentary photography and film maker. I find it SO important to remember life’s moments – as they are fleeting…

stacey ilyse photography - Featured Photographer #inbeautyandchaos #fineart #documentary #documentyourdays #family #createart

What genre do you shoot?
Fine art inspired documentary family photography and videos. I shoot life as it is – but with the intent to not just document what I see but create art while I’m doing it.

stacey ilyse photography - Featured Photographer #inbeautyandchaos #fineart #documentary #documentyourdays #family #createart

Who or what inspires you?
Relationships – and the bonds that hold us together… I am fascinated by sibling relationships – being an only child, watching my own girls together and documenting their ever growing and changing relationship is truly amazing. Also the bonds of friendship – young and old… I hold my friends close to me – like family – and their children and my children… they too are a large part of my photographic journey, how they play into the lives of my children.

Humor – I think it is so important to document the humorous aspects of life, parenthood, childhood, and so much more! Kids are hilarious – from their tantrums, to their expressions, to the joys! I love capturing that as well!

In regards to photographic inspiration – I’ve always loved Francesca Woodman – her beautiful, eerie, self portraits always resonate with me – and as a photography student really pushed me to work with myself as my subject- something I still try and do within my own personal 365 – to include myself at least every other week…
for a more modern photographic inspiration – I think it changes as I evolve. I recently stumbled upon Ana M Rosenberg – her bw’s are incredible and her depth with them are amazing to me… whereas Melissa Walkup’s color editing is omg amazing!

I think we are always evolving and changing as we go.

stacey ilyse photography - Featured Photographer #inbeautyandchaos #fineart #documentary #documentyourdays #family #createart

What kind of camera bag do you carry and what’s in it?
I have 2! My professional bag and my personal one!
For my client sessions I have a house of flynn backpack – it is packed with both my canon 5d mark4 and a 24-70 lens. as well as my new love – FujiFilm X-T2 with a 18-55 or 23mm on it.

For my personal – day to day work I use an ONA bag (kinda obsessed with it!) and it has only one camera – my FujiFilm X-T2.

I am now shooting MOST of my client work with the X-T2 – the size and weight are just perfect for me.

stacey ilyse photography - Featured Photographer #inbeautyandchaos #fineart #documentary #documentyourdays #family #createart

What are some of your favorite photography products?
I LOVE me some lensbabies – they allow me to just have fun but create something different – i use the edge 50 and sweet 35.

I also am really enjoying Ana M Rosenberg’s presets for my post work – mostly for BW processing.

Besides that I’m a purist and like to just capture the moment.

stacey ilyse photography - Featured Photographer #inbeautyandchaos #fineart #documentary #documentyourdays #family #createart

Three random things about yourself:
I can touch my tongue to my nose! My girls think it is pretty cool!

I lived in Hong Kong when I was younger

I have grand plans to travel the world and take a “Gap year” in a few years.

stacey ilyse photography - Featured Photographer #inbeautyandchaos #fineart #documentary #documentyourdays #family #createart

Best piece of advice you’ve received?
no one else can do it for you, or as good as you can, or want it as badly as you do… so do it for yourself and make your dreams a reality.

stacey ilyse photography - Featured Photographer #inbeautyandchaos #fineart #documentary #documentyourdays #family #createart

Any advice you’d like to share?
I always teach my girls to be proud, gracious, kind, and strong – I think the same holds true for personal success and happiness.

stacey ilyse photography - Featured Photographer #inbeautyandchaos #fineart #documentary #documentyourdays #family #createart

Mac or PC? Photoshop or Lightroom?

Tell us a little bit about your session!
“There are places in the heart you don’t even know exist until you love a child.” -Anne Lamott

This session reminded me so much of my own life when my first child was a year old. There were the necessary paraphernalia strewn about the town house: high chair, baby gate, toys, and books. There were the evening routines: play, evening walk, bath, and nighttime nursing session. Mostly, I remembered the intense wonder, pride, and love that were evident in the beaming eyes of these parents as they witnessed each move and giggle of their one-year old daughter.
