Tell us a little bit about yourself:
I specialize in custom newborn and maternity photography around Charlotte, NC. I was born and raised in the Carolinas and adopted as an infant by the most incredible parents I could have imagined. Wake Forest is my alma mater, although my dad raised me as a Tarheel. My pride and joy are named Will (4) and Charlie (2), and my heart belongs to their incredible dad who I married in 2007. Along with 2 dogs and 2 cats our life is a regular circus, all happily residing in Lake Wylie, SC.
How did you get started in photography?:
I have been an artist all my life. Art was a huge part of my childhood. Wall murals, watercolor paintings and charcoal drawings helped me to develop my ‘artistic eye’ and I learned the basics of photography when I entered high school. I have memories of darkrooms and pinhole cameras, but my passion for digital art solidified while I was studying at Wake Forest University. I credit my husband for fueling my obsession for family photography – he would say about our oldest son “he’ll never be this small again!” and then I would run and grab my camera. Photography allows me to capture a single moment and turn it into a piece of art unlike any other medium I have studied. Kids really do grow.up.so.FAST!
What do you shoot?:
I focus mainly on newborn and maternity, but also shoot family and real estate.
Who or what inspires you?:
Everything around me! My boys are the reason I picked up and learned how to shoot manually. But my photography is influenced by my world. I love looking to other artwork and paintings for inspiration. Beautiful landscapes and the changing colors of nature with the seasons inspire me as well.
What kind of camera bag do you carry and what’s in it?:
I have a Stella gray Epiphanie bag with a Nikon D600 and a variety of lenses. My favorites are my 24-70 2.8 and 100mm 2.8 macro for newborns, and 85 1.4 or 80-200 2.8 for maternity and family.
What are some of your favorite photography products?:
Expodisc. Don’t leave home without it!
Three random things about yourself:
1. I drink about a gallon of Arizona green tea everyday.
2. Ironically (for being a photographer) my vision is terrrrribly near-sided.
3. I was recently diagnosed with primary Sjogrens.
