Tell us a little bit about yourself:
I am a hobbyist with a passion for all types of memory keeping. I have also been an avid scrapbooker since 1997 and every year I make the family a slideshow set to music that we watch on Christmas. I was the kid with a camera at school and on field trips. My son’s life is well documented. It’s just what I have always done and what I hope I am always able to do.
How did you get started in photography?
I started on film in high school, although I never got to actually use a darkroom. I was on the yearbook staff and my favorite part of creating the layouts was choosing which photos to use. Then some years ago my dad bought what I called a “fancy camera” and he gave it to me to use whenever I wanted. Once I had my first son my passion grew even more. In 2003 I lost that son and all I had left of him was a series of photos and that just reinforced the importance that I always placed on photographing my life. In 2004 my second son was born and I was able to pick up the camera again. I went through several point and shoots before finally buying a DSLR in 2014. I put it on manual and never looked back.
What do you shoot?
I love to shoot my daily life with my family, including my fur babies. I also enjoy conceptual sessions where I have a vision and am able to create what I had envisioned. I enjoy coming up with new ideas and being able to execute them with wardrobe and location choices. Luckily I have people in my life that will humor me from time to time.
Who or what inspires you?
The short and easy answer to this is life. In the grand scheme of things, life is short. And I don’t want to forget any of it. Beauty, art, music…there are many things in the world that are inspirational!
What kind of camera bag do you carry and what’s in it?
I have a Porteen Gear bag and an Epiphanie bag that I switch out depending on what I’m doing. I shoot with a Nikon D610 and my Sigma ART 35mm 1.4 pretty well stays on it most of the time. I also carry a Nikon 50mm 1.8G but I don’t use it a whole lot. Sometimes it’s better for portraits than the 35mm and it’s lighter if I’m doing a lot of walking. I carry a Speedlight but I don’t use it very often. I also carry an extra battery, extra memory card, and a lenspen.
What are some of your favorite photography products?
I love the lenspen. I’m not sure what I did without it before.
Three random things about yourself:
I’m addicted to coffee. No fancy coffee for me…Folgers Classic Roast is my favorite. I drink a pot a day.
My family lived on Guam for a year when I was in high school.
I used to be a clogger.
Best piece of advice you’ve received?
If you like it, then it’s ok. You don’t have to do this just to please everyone else.
Any advice you’d like to share?
So far the best thing that has helped me was joining a Project 52 group. I shot so much more this past winter then I ever had in the past because I had a weekly goal to shoot for. And even in just the past few months I’ve seen some great improvement in myself and my creativity.
Mac or PC? Photoshop or Lightroom?
PC. Lightroom and Photoshop.
Where else can we find you on the web?
I don’t have a website yet but I am on 500px.
